Written and performed by Gavin Bachner, with help on "There's Nothing Left For You" (Karie did the music for that one) and "Secrets Forever" (additional vocals by Karie).

Gavin's liner notes:

Midnight Sea is an album compiling the Fiberoctopus songs recorded in 2010. It's sort of a concept album, with the songs arranged to roughly tell the story of an underwater dreamscape adventure. Basically, there's the delving in (songs 1 and 2), accepting the change and letting go (3 and 4), discovering (5 and 6), realization setting in (7 and 8), confrontation (9 and 10), and the aftermath (11 and 12). You can fill in the details! The album is designed to be listened to with big headphones in the dark whilst picturing an open sea at night.

1. Ain't Gonna Sit This One Out

Music recorded in 10/22/10, vocals on 12/31/10.

2. Into the Moonlit Waves

Nice instrumental. Recorded 10/24/10.

3. There's Nothing Left For You

Collaboration with Karie. She'd been learning to play guitar and sent me a few ideas she came up with. I really loved this one and quickly worked up some lyrics for it. I extended Karie's original track and recorded a bunch of vocals over it.

4. The Rags and a Cinnamon Roll

Return of the ebow. Features my girlfriend Beth asking me to "get the rice going" and me replying "Fuckin' rice" (she called while I was recording vocals and I put the phone up to the mic). Recorded 9/28/10.

5. The Night We Went to Heaven and Returned Just Before Dawn

Weird song that might be hard to sit through, but then it has a sweet acoustic section at the end which might be my favorite moment of the album. Recorded 10/8/10 (minor overdub fix early Jan 2011).

6. Secrets Forever

I like the music to this one, but my vocals/lyrics bug me. Karie helped out by adding some cool backing vocals to sit. Music recorded on 11/4/10, vocals done a few days later I think.

7. Arizona Sawdust

Noisey one. Recorded 9/25/10.

8. Midnight Morning

Nothing to say about this one, really. Recorded 10/20/10, some mixing adjustments done later.

9. These Could Be Underwater Nightmares

This track is basically 4 leftover ideas I had recorded. Threw them together as a filler track. The first part is fittingly titled "drunk harmonizing".

10. Tender Resources

This is the only track here recorded in early 2010. It's from January, while the rest are from September-December 2010.

11. Center of the Sea

This one and the final song are the only ones actually worked on in advance, the rest were bascially jams written and recorded on the same day. This one was written back around early 2007, I think. I used to play it late at night on keyboard in bed, like as a lullaby to myself. This version adds a beat and some ebow guitar. If you listen close, there are some vocals too. Recorded 12/30/10.

12. Coffin Like a Whale

Also writen circa early 2007. One of my favorites. The lyrics may seem creepy, but at its heart it's a sweet song about coping with loss. Fit in well with the rest of the album thematically. Recorded it on the "deadline" of NYE 2010.

Well, that's it for my pretentious liner notes for Midnight Sea. Thanks to the 2 or 3 people who will ever read this far. Hope you enjoy the album!

LYRICS

1. Ain't Gonna Sit This One Out

here we go
down into the ocean
i can feel it grow
alive as it surrounds me
what you'll never know
has somehow just now found me
sleeping in the tide
creeping thru my eyes

i ain't gonna sit this one
i ain't gonna sit this one out
i ain't gonna sit this one
i ain't gonna sit
yeah, i got a sickness but i ain't gonna sit this one out

finally here
devised before the ages
we can feel it near
everyone would hate us
if they couldn't hear
the sounds in which we're bathing
the singing of the sea
the song to set us free

if we could die
right here at this moment
i'm sure it'd be fine
man has never known a more desirable time
time to let it go
sinking in the depths
fuck everything we've left

2. Into the Moonlit Waves

[instrumental]

3. There's Nothing Left For You

how can i be on your side, if you won't be on mine?
how can we meet up in heaven, if you don't wanna die?
there's nothing left to prove
there's nothing left to lose
there's nothing.. nothing left for you

you never wanna die
you never wanna die

how can i be on your side, if you won't be on mine?
how can we meet up in heaven, if you're afraid to fly?
there's nothing left to prove
there's nothing left to lose
there's nothing.. nothing left for you

4. The Rags and a Cinnamon Roll

you got the rags and a cinnamon roll
what's on your back and the lies that you told
you're gonna lack, decrepit and old
but you can snack and you'll never be cold

5. The Night We Went to Heaven and Returned Just Before Dawn

we went to heaven and we had some bills to pay
and then we paid them off and it was all ok
and then we drowned and the angels filled up our lungs
and then we found a little piece of us in everyone
and we saw the light, we tried to hold it close
but we had our fingers tied, slipped out beneath our nose
when we came to all that we believed had come and gone
we made our way to school in the moment dark became the dawn

6. Secrets Forever

we swim in pools of dead witches
just like our forefathers did
but where they failed and spilled all their secrets
we're keeping them hidden

and i don't care if you're lonely
you told me your sosh, i got it right here
for just a few bucks you could own me
but don't ask for my thoughts 'cause i'll never tell

secrets forever and we never lie
with every blink we sink it deeper inside
secrets forever and we never lie
ten times the secrets than stars in the sky

sometimes i forget to blink
but i never forget all the secrets i keep
i could bury a box right under your feet
and you still wouldn't find it if you dug for a week

we never lie

7. Arizona Sawdust

when i said i wanted out
i didn't mean right now
when i said i wanted out
i meant at some point

8. Midnight Morning

[instrumental]

9. These Could Be Underwater Nightmares

[instrumental]

10. Tender Resources

i wanna fight you back
but my muscles are weaker
and all of the people always eat up all of your crap
and they take your side, eagerly take you side
[etc]

11. Center of the Sea

you're right here with me
in the center of the sea
it's midnight now
and it'll always be

12. Coffin Like a Whale

i ride your coffin like a whale
beneath these seven seas that you and me used to sail
underneath these unforgiving waves
below the surface they can't hurt us
now we're safe
and i will carry on
until your body's gone
until you decompose
into just teeth and bones

and that switch is always on
that switch is always on

i tried to take your words to heart
and now they're echoing from canyons in the dark
taking the bits i remember
and trying to tape 'em together
and hang 'em up on my wall
before i forget them all

and that switch is always on
that switch is always on
that switch is always on
that switch is always...
